Learning about Police Officers and Firefighters in our Community

Three Nursery pupils, two boys and a girl are pictured sat together at a table, learning about counting numbers.

This week Little Birds have been inquiring into how police officers and firefighters help us in the world in which we live. We have been developing our understanding of others in the community around us.

We all enjoyed the mini provocations which were set up in the class; to solve the crime scene by thinking of ideas as detectives and roleplaying as firefighters.

Two young boys from Nursery are pictured pointing foam tubes at an illustration of a fire in a play kitchen area, imitating firemen tackling a scene.
Two young Nursery pupils, a boy and a girl, are seen printing their handprints onto sheets of paper, using paint.
A young boy in Nursery can be seen creating footprints with his shoes, using paint on a sheet of paper on the floor.

Some of us enjoyed participating in imaginative play by dressing up as police officers and acting out scenarios. We developed our expressive skills!

To work on our counting and number recognition, we enjoyed learning a new number rhyme song called ‘Five police cars parked in a row’.

Little Birds also spoke about calling 999 in an emergency to request help from the police or fire service.

We identified and shared ideas about different scenarios in which we may need help. This developed our communication and listening skills.

We were fascinated by the phones; we pressed the coloured buttons to call each other and converse with our peers.
