Starting Big School

Students playing with musical toys

This week we have been inquiring about what happens at school when we start our new classes in September.  Some past pupils from Reception came and talked about what they have enjoyed learning in their class and gave explanations about the routines they followed.  Little Birds spoke about how they were feeling about their new class. Then they made an emotional barometer to help them share and explore these feelings further.

Little Birds also looked at the items, resources and uniforms that may be needed for school; they even practised packing a school bag for the mornings.

The children went on walks around the school taking photos on the iPad to show to their peers when they returned to nursery. This was a very exciting experience for them to participate in.  During the walk round, Little Birds explored the Performance & Music area and the mud kitchen in the Reception playground. They were fascinated by the different areas they might get to use next year.

They also met Mrs Reid, our Family Liaison Officer, on our journey around school. The children were so pleased to show their books they had chosen from the school library.

Looking at Phonics sound for the sound G

Little Birds were letter and sound detectives looking for objects that began with the sound g.

They fished for letters in the water tray, practised writing the letter g on the board with chalks and mark making in flour and pointed to the g on the phonics freeze and said ‘This is g, g, g for glasses.’.
