Class Information

  • Home reader books are changed at least once a week. We encourage children to read the book twice – once to sound out new words and find out what the book is about and the second time to read it with more fluency and answer questions about its content. Please write in your child’s reading record book how they read. We will hear your child read regularly in school to assess their progress. Reading is essential to progress so please try and hear your child read as often as possible.
  • Homework will be sent home during  each term and will be linked to our current topic in class. There will be a choice of homework challenges for your child to complete. The completed homework will need to be returned by the last week of term.
  • Spellings will be sent home on a Friday in your child’s blue spelling book and they will complete a short test the following Friday. Please support your child in learning these words.
  • Mathletics Your child has their log in details in their reading record. Maths homework is set weekly and is often linked to what we have been learning in school that week.
  • Please return letters or reply slips in your child’s book bag. The children are encouraged to hand them in to a class adult in the morning.
  • Please ensure water bottles and belongings are clearly labelled.
  • Star of the week! Every Friday, children’s work is celebrated in assembly. The adults in the class will choose one child who will be our star of the week will receive a certificate to take home.
  • Buster’s reading club–  Children need to read at home for at least 10 minutes every Wednesday and this must be recorded on their bookmark inside the reading record book.  Any other reading that week must be recorded in their contact book. Please make a big effort to get this done as the children are rewarded with lovely prizes and it encourages reading.
  • Purple Mash Purple Mash is an online resource which we are using to teach Computing this year. The children can access all the resources that they use in school at home! It is a very useful tool and it is parent friendly. It has tutorial videos to help parents understand what their child needs to do.
  • Walk in Wednesday – this is a weekly opportunity to come into class and look at your child’s learning at the end of the school day (3 – 3.15pm)

Here are some handy resources to use to help support your child.

parents-maths-booklet– This shows the methods the children are learning in maths and it will help you support them with maths homework.

100 square– This will help your child learn all the numbers to 100. Also it can used to see patterns of counting in 2’s, 5’s and 10’s.

green-words-1 green-words-2 green-words-3– These are green words that they are learning during Read Write Inc (literacy hour)  the children can practice these at home to improve their reading and writing skills.

set-1-alien-words set-2-alien-words set-3-alien-words– Alien words are words that not real but the child read these as it tests their reading skills. This would also be a good thing to practice with them. Set 1 being the easier sounds and set 3 being the harder sounds.

cursive-letter-formation-handwriting-sheet-with-rhymes– This is good help for the children to learn to write cursively.

Year 1 Topic : Sharing the Planet.

Our theme is water.  On our launch day all our activities needed water.  The children used marbling inks to decorate paper. They investigated whether cornflour was a solid or liquid and raced wax disks with their friends. Finally, they investigated ice and tried to guess what was frozen in it.

The children really enjoyed this day and subsequently they came up with lots of questions, some of which we are using in our Splish, Splosh, Splash topic this term.
